I've been in and out of pumpkin growing for some time without the help of the internet. Since I found this site I've been reading things such as "My 1260 martin is ready to go" and "A friend of mine has a 567.5 brock that should make a good showing this year". Ok, whats to scoop here, since when did mother nature start numbering seeds?

lol....Giant Pumpkin 101
Giant Pumpkin Growers keep track of genetics of pumpkins grown.
We will give the example of my 818.5 Engel 2005 as an example
The 818.5 was a 1370 Rose 2003 x Self.
The 1370 Rose was a 1260 Wier x 712 Kuhn
and the list goes on like a family tree.
You will often see
EST= Estimated weight
DMG= Damaged

Many growers will write the weight of the pumpkin on each seed to help identify them. So will also number each seed witha seed number ie #74

The main reason growers number their seeds is to track them. Say, for instance, I trade seeds with you and you trade my seed to someone else. That person contacts me with the number and I say I traded it to so-and-so. The chain can be kept track of and anyone with doubts about a seed's autnenticity can verify it.

Buddy Conley did that with his 1177 and, if I'm lucky enough to grow a big 'un in high demand, I'll do the same.

It's no wonder I drink, how did I ever grow a pumpkin before I had a 1785 leroy.

we dont number our seeds but as of late we have stapled the coin envelope closed to make people think twice before any hankie pankie takes place.
unfortunately we never used to worry about cheeters and low lifes trying to pass off inferior seeds just to fill there seed chest with others good seeds.
with so many in the hobby today its just the way its evolved.
this is the main reason we dont trade seeds. we give ours out stapled with a photo as mentioned above.
we only request seeds from people we know to be honest.

Yea, be carefull who you send your money to for seed exchange. Sometimes you send money for seed trade and get nothing but an excuse in return. Only send to reliable proven people. That is all I got to say about that.
