I've just read something about shading a pumpkin while it grows, can someone explain this to me?

shading, the pumpkin as it grows, a tarp, blue, orange, so its not in total sun light.

the theory is that the sunlight makes the flesh of the pumpkin harden and/or ripen prematurely. it is pretty much standard practice to shade your pumpkins.

Some people fine it easier to just cover the pumpkin with a sheet.

So I'm supposed to cover an entire patch of pumpkins? This seems a bit much seeing as how I'm planting 72 plants this year.

I would just shade your competition giant pumpkins.
