Does anyone know for sure if squirrels do return home after relocating them? I have moved 5 so far over 5 miles away to a nice treed place with running water, towards the mountains next to Ole LongBeards patch......Some folks have told me they will return......Fact or fiction.......

spray paint the tails orange before release. should be easy to track. but then again, LongBeard will definitely know where they came from. better keep him guessing.

Wiz,

Ever try to get rid of mice or rats? If they bother you that much, it's time to remove their food source or make THEM one of yours!

I think 5 miles is a little far for them to come home. I remember my dad and I took a coon once about 5 or 6 miles from the house to get rid of it (but I don't remember why we trapped it in the first place... ?). I asked him why we just didn't take it to the road a mile from our house and he said it would come back.
But for squirrels...if you want to really get rid of them, they're good in soup.

A friend of mine in New Jersey moved one about 2-3 miles in a mature treed metro area (Cherry Hill). He had a little trouble with traffic on the way back, and claims the squirrel beat him home.

Now that is funny Dakota..

I know growing up that my grandma used to start with some vegetable oil, add about 4 big onions and get them transluscent, then add the floured squirrel, 1 quart of water, and simmer for about 2 hours. That was an amazing recipe that I will never forget.

Gary,
Not to insinuate anything here but you know the bigger the nut, the more the squirrels will arrive . . .

Yo Wiz, as you know, I've had issues with squirrels over the past couple of years and employed the "trap and move" method before I ended up starting a squirrel swimming team.

When I re-located them, I was advised to take them a minimum of 2 miles away but was told to make sure that they had a body of water or a major highway to cross to ensure that they would not return.

Now, with my new method, they do not return at all but for every one that I take away, it seems there is a new couple vying for the new territory to take over.

They chew the crap out of all my vines and even placing water all around the patch did not help....I don't know why they chew the vines, I think it just might be for sport or boredom!!

I try to teach them to swim while still in the cage. They are not very fast learners though.

Shoot them, cook them, eat them. Simple as that.

Plenty of squirrels to go around for sure. They're like mice.....get rid of one, another takes its place.......laws of nature. If there's a food source available, something will find it.

There's only one sure way to get rid of them with the least amount of effort.

Caught 150 or so at my place last year, and have already caught 25 so far this spring. One day last year I caught 6 in one day.The majority I catch are males, and I like it when I get a female especially this time of year / breeding season. I take them either across the interstate, or my favorite place is the eastern plains where there are no trees. Out there they do not even like to come out of the cage, and when they do, well no place to run/no trees. The foxes, coyotes, owls, hawks, and eagles have to eat too, and what a better way to feed them tree rat delicasy. There should be a contest for who has the most squirrel tails at the end of the year wins a trophy....lol just joking. Hey wiz I told you that one squirrel was going to go tell the rest of his extended family about how tasty your pumpkins are...lol

I moved another one last nite, so that makes 6. I used to think they were fairly smart creatures but they have been getting in the cage with out any bait. Guess word has got out that LongBeards a great host.....lol.
I dont feel bad moving them over to his side of town since that comment about the RED high heels, fish net stockings, and the purse. You know every time I introduced myself at Niagara, folks took a step or two back........."Oh your TheWiz, I heard about you......." Well most everybody, except Eddy.....

Ill keep trapping them and moving them, Its better than cutting their heads off with a shovel........and it will feed the red tails and the owls.......

. . .there's probably a neighbor who knows you're doing this, and has called all his friends to move their squirrels to your place. This kind of entertainment can get a guy thru the winter.

Hey Wiz, sounds like you got a mild case of tree rat up there, down here every day is a 2 tree rat day or so it seems. As I posted earlier one day I caught 6. If I ran out of food, I could eat tree rat and probably be fat and happy. You ever hear of squirrel tail gravy ??...LOL. As I inferred they breed like rats and are impossible to get rid of. Maybe my next trip up north I will drop off some squirrel genetics from the south, live kickin and ready to breed like a good tree rat..lol
