Five to ten inches tonight and tomorrow. I guess I won't be rototilling soon. Is anyone else tired of winter weather?

I've heard from 3 different people today that a spring snow after the ground is thawed, is good for the soil. One person added that it built up nitrogen levels. Anybody know a scientific explanation for this?

We received 6 or 7" of snow here yesterday. I was happy, as we need need the moisture.

From my understanding..Nitrogen being the largest single component in the Earth's Atmosphere. Is trapped by the falling snow and is converted into nitrites.

Your question piqued my curiousity regarding the idea that precipitation could be a significant contributor (as well as leacher) of soil nitrogen levels.

Lo and behold, there appears to be a fair amount of information on this topic. According to the source below, annual precipitation contributes 6-7lbs of Nitrogen, in the form of nitrates and ammonium, to the soil. Apparently, this is less than 10% of the amount needed to produce a healthy corn crop, however its nothing to sneeze at either.

Perhaps this partly answers the question why the garden just seems to grow better when mother nature waters vs the hose? Enjoy....

My apologies, i left off a vital piece of info- 6-7lbs/acre.

Now a good thunderstorm....with ground lightning will produce even more nitrogen...

The old VT farmers used to call a spring snow "poor mans manure". Maybe because of added N to the soil.

I hate to tell you guys. It was 77-80 in the central valley ( Sacramento) today. But we do need more rain.

the windchill is 3 degrees. I don't want to walk to class!!! There's crocuses blooming on campus and tulip leaves up, and now the poor things are probably freezing.

I'll be there Bill. I'm just hoping that 582 germinates. It's 6 years old (and it's been in your possession, which means it's likely to have been stored someplace bad, like under your mattress), so I'm going to have to beg for a back-up, just in case.....

Jim, at least I live in the warm part of the state, by the way, I have also taken a spring soil sample this month. Have a Happy Easter Jim and your family.
