First time user of molasses and I was interested in how to apply it and when and where to buy it? What does it exactly do for the giant pumpkin plants? Thanks for any info. Bonnie

Never had any luck with molasses and pumpkin growth. However, molasses on waffles makes my stomach grow!

Be carefull with molasses. We used it very sparingly in our manure tea brewer last season and still had to kill off the afids and such.

The most evident benefit of molasses is as food for the microbes. Although microbes will be present to break down organic matter, it also attracts earthworms. Smaller organisms lead to larger organisms. The more life in the patch, the better. Don't apply it to foliage, though. As Craig Lembke put it, it acts as sunglasses for the foliage.
It can usually be purchased at bulk feed supply stores. I gave 14 cents a pound for it just last week.
I apply it during every tillage in the spring at 8 oz. per gallon of water. Some may say this is overkill, but it won't hurt anything.

I have used molasses as a foliar for the past 4 years with good luck. I mix approx 2 tablespoons per gallon of water with seaweed and sometimes fish. I put this in a compression sprayer and spray the whole plant and the ground around it. Molasses is a fine soil feeder as long as you don't over do it. I also overhead water so the molasses and other foliar fertilizers don't build up on the leaves. My plants are usually healthy and problem free deep into September. John
