You can use papermill fabric which some growers on this site use but sands A little easier to get yer hands on and sometimes cheaper. I use playground sand which I buy at home depot for about 3.50 at 50 pounds. I wouldnt recomend styrafoam which could be used but tends to crack and move to much.

4ft x 4ft sheet of cheap plywood ( wrap a piece of heavy gauge plastic around plywood before placing under pumpkin)
works real well if you dont have mill fabric.

I use a rubber horse stall mat cut in half. One inch thick, it provides a great cushion and protection from the moist soil and burrowers.

Foam insulation 1" and a bed of sand works for me!

PAP I also use cheap plywood under my pumpkins and then lay some sand on top of the boards..but why do you use plastic around the board what does it help?
