I saw that the record is held by Micheal Schroeder at 1028.5 pounds. However, I've been told that it may not qualify as a squash with the new standards. Can anyone help?

it was not true green it was weighed at SOGPG in 2004, was concidered squash there under old rules

This is Mike Schroeder, I was shocked it was considered a squash. It had very little green to it. Many people there thought it should have been considered a pumpkin. Hope this helps, 5 years later. I haven't been in pumpkins or growing for many years.
