Has anyone ever cooked with AG's? What did you make with it and what was the quality like? Do they have the same properties (flavor & texture) as regular pumpkins?

If it's not on the sweet side, would it be better as a fried squash type of thing? Maybe cut it in small chunks and batter and deep fry them?

I've canned AG pumpkin and it worked fine. I've made pies, breads, etc.. You may need to add a little extra sugar but not that much. In my experience the darker AG's do taste a little more like regular pie pumpkins.

well the way I see it...is even the animals choose to eat the AG's last. So they can not be that great tasting. Now throw a cushaw or a sweet lightning squash and you have a fight going on. Ever seen a goose take on a llama...

If youve ever had squash pie, youll know that it is alittle different, but not much from pumpkin pie. Its all in how you spice it. Even though AG's aren't the best to use, it would still be neat to take what was carved off from one and cook it into a pie. I personally like the "One Pie" recipe.

As PA Punkin' Pharmer said, I would think that the orange-red ones would have better flavor. One more reason to grow 'em orange for me this year. I plan to test some different recipes of squash and pumpkin dishes to see how much adjusting it would take to make them taste good. It just seems like such a waste to let them just rot away back to the earth. Imagine how many homeless and starving people just one pumpkin could feed. We have a local lady that cooks a thanksgiving dinner for anyone that would like to attend. All the meals are completely free. Most of the food is donated and what isn't is bought with donated money (they have never had to purchase a turkey, they usually get 30-50 turkeys donated to them each year). All of the work is done by volunteers. Most of the people that come are elderly or have no family and would otherwise spend the holiday alone. I think it would be cool to find a way to prepare the AG's as it would only take one or two pumpkins to feed everybody a good sized portion of a side dish or dessert.

The young culls at around baseball size are great sliced, breaded, and fried like zucchini. I've heard pumpkin flowers are great deep fried but I've never tried them.

Try it raw, taste like carrots. However, I always ask myself would I eat it after putting on the fertilizers, fungicides and pesticides. BTY most of your pumpkin pies in the stores are made from squash.

My Dad insists on making his pies with 3/4 butternut squash and 1/4 pumpkin. I always have the best results using just the sugar pie pumpkins. I like butternut sliced and fried but not for pies. I have never tried pumpkin soup but I make a mean pumpkin custard. My grandma makes a great pumpkin bread. I want to try to make pumpkin nut muffins with cream cheese frosting or filling. I heard they're awesome!

Last year I cut some sugar pie pumpkin into small cubes and made a batter with pumpkin pie spices, after coating the cubes real good I deep fried them and served them with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar. The kids just LOVED it!

Baseball to softball sized culls are good diced up & cooked in a stir fry, egg scramble, etc. They can also be eaten raw in a salad, but I prefer a baby zuchini for the salad.

Just add sugar.

Makes a LOT of pies, but you need to add sugar.

However, diced and fried goes better with beer.
