Yes, the Idaho license plate says "famous potatoes", which is much better than "infamous potatoes". Michael Pollan's book of several years ago, The Botany of Desire, has a chapter on potatoes, with the main thread being how the demand for uniform (Yukon Gold) potatoes by McDonald's for french fries, has affected the Idaho potato growers. Well written, and fascinating stuff! Maybe if McDonalds popularized french fried pumpkin strips, we could all get rich.

that is one thing that most people out of idaho think all idaho is good for potatoes. Yes we do produce a lot but not every person in this state produces them, i haven't grown potatoes for along time just dont seem that interested.

There is a good reason potatoes are grown in Idaho. With your product under the soil, it can't be damaged by wind and freezing temps.
Eric, we have been talking amongst a few of us (before we knew who you were) about forming a group. Informally, Brian and I are starting to use the term Idaho Giant Pumpkin Growers (IGPG). Brian is planning to teach a class at the Idaho Falls Town and Country nursery, and I am planning to teach a class at the Pocatello store.
Beyond that, we hope to gather names of folks who attend each class, and maybe, perhaps, possibly, hold a summer patch tour. But that is just in the dream stage at this time.
Among our group, none of us feel particularly enthused about getting into the seed auction thing... I know it's not really my thing...
Club, yes. But it's really, really informal at this point. You can join. No entrance fee.

Part of the problem in Idaho is the distance between us all. It's really like three states. South-east Idaho, where we are, then there is the Boise area (south-west Idaho), and then the panhandle. Our state record comes from Bonner's Ferry, which, I noted, is nearly as far from us as is Sacramento. (Not quite, but almost.) I think eventually each region will have it's own end of year weighoff.

Its hard, well for me....to grow taters in my garden, seem to never get large. But I give all my attention to my kins.....Yes agree too about the distance between patches, But hopefully with organizing and recuriting more growers the distance becomes less ( the first "more with less")...lol. Besides if had a 1300 pounder out of Colorado it might have to take a trip somewheres........cuz the bigger ones still in the patch!

Hoping to reduce the distance between patches......Sounds like another mission...... Grow'em BIG
