to cover vines what do you use compost or soil??? also if you overhead water the soil will remain wet so wont this result in rotting of the vines???

no, watering the soil thats covering a vine will not rot the vine . overwatering on the other hand would.
we always go back and uncover the main around late july so that the main can breath better and we can check periodicly for any possible problems.
if you get a borer in a side vine its no were near as bad as getting one in the main. at least with the main and a couple feet of sides off the main uncovered late july you can see right away if there is a problem and chances are you will be able to correct it.

thanks pap i will then cover vines and make sure not to over water either and thats a great idea uncovering vines late july...
