Whidbey Island

Can you tell? The days are finally getting longer, winter is slowly giving away to spring. The ancients, who worshipped the sun and the seasons, finally could tell the days were getting longer in early February and celebrated the return of the sun. It was called Juno Februata & then the old Christian Church renamed it Candlemas. We now celebrate the same day and call it Groundhog Day.

For us pumpkin growers this means the beginning of a whole new season, so start preparing for a wonderful 2007 growing season (with apologies to those in the Southern Hemisphere) and hope the groundhog doesn't see his shadow.

But the days are getting longer. It's light out when I get home from work. Always a good sign.

Keep in mind folks that cold weather kills germs and most of what causes allergies and gives us some time to recoupe. Spring will be here soon enough.

The groundhog did not see his shadow today. Just 2 weeks to spring!!! After that he best keep his butt out of our patch.

I'm glad to hear that Spring is only 2 weeks away, I can't take much more snow. We almost had another dusting last night.

If the groundhog does see his shadow it's 6 more weeks of winter. If not... it's only a month and 1/2. ;0)

It was -1F here this morning. The groundhog got up, stepped out, froze his little you-know-what off and hopped back into bed!

The dirt pig stuck his head out here this AM, saw a bright sun with sun dogs, felt the sting of -5 degrees and -35 wind chill, and went back to bed.

The groundhog came out here today and I blew his melon-farming head off.

I heard them talking about the groundhog this morning inbetween snooze alarm button hittings. I have no clue if it saw its shadow or not, but it sure doesn't feel like spring is coming anytime soon. It's not even supposed to get above 0 tomorrow here.

I hear the broadcast on my way to work every Ground Hogs Day out of KDKA Pittsburgh live from Punxsutawney Pa. The excitment grows within me as I anticipate the forecast. The morning drive is cold, the roads are crappy, and I'm not awake yet. Whatever the prediction, the whole thing makes me smile, it brightens up my day. I really like Ground Hogs Day! Its a mile stone in the winter!

LMAO AT LARRY CHECKON..........A CHAMPION AT HIS BEST. :))

I figure that the sleeping critter, an overgrown fat "a" "double scribble" squirrel simply at this time every year had, to take a dump. Having gotten up he finds relief, of a most pleasant nature. Then being smart enough to know he nearly froze off his most importent parts darted back into the hole, for the rest, of the unpleasant days remaining.

The "hoop 'de do" in the village of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is way over populated with the organized excitement and publicity derived from Phill's appearance. This having been said.........."your absence from joining in on the fun, in person, is strictly your loss". "I personally certify that the beer this weekend and this weekend only is of a higher quality than elsewhere, in the world, for this one exciting weekend".
