Since my team (the Raiders) had yet another awful season and I have no real interest in who wins and who loses this year's Superbowl, I thought I'd try to get something together to make it more interesting.

Would anyone be interested in doing a superbowl pool? Instead of having a buy in of $5, the buy in could be a seed or seeds from your own 2006 pumpkins. Prizes would be given away based on the score at the end of the 1st quarter, half time, 3rd quarter, and the final score.

2006 seeds could be awarded based on the score at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters and to sweeten the deal, a proven seed or two could be awarded based on the score at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters.

For your typical pool, we'd need either 25 or 100 people to enter the pool to ensure someone wins. (Either a 5x5 or 10x10 grid) Basically, everyone who enters would be given a square on the grid. Once the grid is full, numbers from 0-9 would be drawn at random and assigned to each row and column. An example of the grid can be seen here: http://www.dortamid.com/mens_club/pool.htm

On the above example, numbers will replace the letters at the top and left of the grid. Your numbers would be the number corresponding to the row and column your square is in. As an example, say your number for the Colts was 7 and 0 for the Bears. If the first quarter score was 7 Colts, 0 Bears, you would win the 1st quarter. If the half time score was 17 Colts, Bears 10, you win again.

If we do a 5x5 grid, each person would be given two sets of numbers, thus doubling your chance to win compared to the 10x10 grid.

I'd be willing to start it off by donating a 695 Handy and 1420.5 LaRue to the half time and final score pots and a seed from every pumpkin I've grown since 2004 for the both the 1st and 3rd quarter pots.

In order for this to work, we need either 24 or 99 more people to "buy in." No need to donate any proven seeds to buy in, just seed from your personal stock. To ensure it's fair, the entire grid, with numbers, would be posted on BP.com before the game starts for everyone to see. Anyone interested in getting in on something like this?

Go Raiders!

Awesome. I just uploaded a 25 square grid to my diary. Once the image is approved, please post the "address" of the square you want (letter of the row and column for that square) and I'll add your name to that spot. The day before the big game, numbers will be drawn at random and will replace the letters at the top and left of the grid.

It would be great to get 100 people in on this so if we have to, we can go to a bigger grid to give everyone a shot.

So, just post what square you want and what your "buy in" is and you'll get your square. Like I said before, no need to donate any proven seeds to buy in but if you have something you'd like to donate for the half time and final score pot, that would be great.

My donation to get it started is seeds from all the pumpkins I've grown for the 1st and 3rd quarter pot, a 695 Handy and 1420.5 LaRue for the half time and final score pot. To keep things totally fair, I won't be eligible to win and won't participate.

I'm already excited about watching the game now!

You're now in there Pete. There ate two squares left right now. If there's not enough people to do a 10x10, I suppose we could do a 5x10 grid.

Each person would get 2 numbers for one team and 1 number for the other, which means each person would have two possible ways to win. With 50 entrants, that takes care of all the combinations.

If there are still more people interested, please post. If not, once the grid is full, I'll randomly draw the numbers from a hat and post it. Thank you all for making the big game a little more interesting this year!

Hi all, I'll upload the latest grid to my diary shortly so you can see where you are in the grid. Numbers won't be drawn until the grid is completely full.

Since there are still people wanting in, I went ahead and made it a 5x10 grid. Everyone still has double the chance to win compared to a typical 10x10 pool.

If you posted here, you have a square. Thanks to everyone who signed up so far for making the first pumpkin pool such a success!

23 more squares available now so anyone wanting in, please post here!

1/29/2007 8:34:35 PM

BrianInOregon

Eugene, OR

Dean S, ee was already taken but I can put you in somewhere else if that's OK with you. It's all random anyway.

kunz, once the image is approved by BP.com, the grid should be available in my diary. Numbers will replace the letters at the top and left of the grid.

Hope that helps.

Hi all, we should have plenty of room for everyone who's posted and emailed so far. If we have to, we'll go to your standard 10x10 so everyone has a shot. I would have started out with a 10x10 grid but I never expected that so many people would be interested. I'm not at my home computer now but I'll get the latest grid posted to my diary this evening.

Everyone who posted, regardless of what you donate, will be given a square. This is all in good fun!!

As for the seeds, I was thinking that it would be best for everyone to send them directly to the winners. I could put the names of everyone who donated seeds into a hat and randomly pull an even amount of names per quarter. The names that are pulled for the 1st quarter, those people would send their agreed donation to the winner of the 1st quarter. The same would go for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters.

The proven seeds that have been generously donated would be kept out of the random draw and simply awarded to the 1/2 time and final score winners. Does this sound like a fair way of doing it to everyone?

This is your pool so please let me know how you would like the seeds handled.

More this evening,
Brian

Hey all, I just added everyone who requested a square. Thank to all your generous donations, there is really an impressive bunch of seeds available!

Rather than uploading a picture of the grid to my diary (which is hard to read anyway), you can download the Excel file to see the list of donated seeds, what square you're in, etc. The file is available here: http://www.briansinsanity.com/pool.xls

I've received quite a few emails and sorted through all the posts as best as I can but if for some reason you posted here and are not in the pool, please post here again and I'll sort it out.

If you have questions or comments, please email me: [email protected]

Thanks again,

Take a square Brian - you deserve it. That would be like saying people who work the pumpkin weigh-offs could not enter a pumpkin. I suspect you've started a tradition. I make a motion that Brian has to take a square.

I second that motion! This is an awesome thing you've started here Brian! It's only fair that you play too!

Brian, Take a square. You can't do all the work then not have a square. If you don't take a square I'd like my name removed from the board.

Hi all,

I just updated the Excel file to include everyone who posted so far. As of this posting, just 1 square is left in the 5x10 grid. Unfortunately, there's no way to go to a 75 square grid and have the numbers work out and I think we'd have a hard time filling 50 more spots in a 10x10 grid by Sunday??

If there are still a bunch of people out there that want to enter, please post within the next day or so. If not, I think we'll have to stay with 50 entrants to ensure a full grid and a winner for every quarter.

As for me taking a square, I think it's best if I don't take a square myself. Eddy Z. has very generously offered to give me a seed if he wins the 1/2 time or final score. I would much see the square go to someone who really wants in instead of taking it myself.

I'm just happy to see everyone excited about the big game!

I should learn to read my posts before actually posting them. I meant to say "I would much rather see the square go to someone who really wants it instead of taking it myself."

The 5x10 grid is now officially full! To see the completed table, please use the link I posted above.

I had some thoughts on how seeds should be awarded and would like your opinions on it. Given the large amount of seeds we have, I think we should spread them out a bit more by doing random drawings after the 4 pool winners are known. Here are my thoughts:

Put all 50 names in a hat. This hat will be for "unproven" draws. Each pool winner will be randomly awarded the unproven seeds donated by 5 entrants by drawing 5 names from the hat. This leaves a balance of 30 names in the hat.

In addition, to the 5 "unproven" draws per winner, the following would be awarded:

First quarter winner-1420.5 LaRue
Half time winner-1233.5 Reiss, 869.5 Calai
Third quarter winner- 1104.5 Hester
Final score winner-695 Handy, 846 Calai

The following would then be awarded by randomly picking names from the 46 people who didn't win in the pool itself:

748 Koch and 1 "unproven" draw
1024 Mombert and 1 "unproven" draw
1057 Werner and 1 "unproven" draw
1074.5 Brunst and 1 "unproven" draw
1081 Leonzi and 1 "unproven" draw
1139 Sherwood and 1 "unproven" draw
1301.5 Eaton and 1 "unproven" draw
6 207 Brinkley watermelon seeds and 1 "unproven" draw
1050 Pugh and 1135 Rose and 1 "unproven" draw
Pumpkin decal and 2 "unproven" draws
"Mystery seed" and 1 "unproven" draw

This brings the total number of winners up to 15 so far. The 35 remaining people who haven't won would have a shot at the 18 remaining draws in the "unproven" hat. Two "unproven" draws would be awarded per person until there are no more names in the unproven hat.

So, assuming I can count (which isn't a good assumption :-)that would bring the total number of winners up to 24. That brings the odds of winning something very close to 2:1 and I think those are pretty darn good odds!

Given the amazing number of participants and all the generous donations, it seems like this helps to spread the seeds out a bit more. Does this sound like a fair arrangement to everyone?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

So help me I can't see where to send the seed or seeds. I will likely be down and confused totally by a new computer with Vista. I am advised that my learning curve is about to be tested. I'm still with you all on this great idea. I will somehow catch up and get back here for instructions.

Brian,
I think it sounds great. I'm running a Super Bowl card that we pay out every time the score changes, which is how we help spread the dead presidents around. Just an idea you might want to kick around for nexy year.
Thanks

Hi all,

First off, it would take forever to thank everyone individually for their generous donations to I'd like to do so now. Without all the participants and their donations, this pool wouldn't be a pool at all!

Regarding seeds, given the short notice, I thought it best for the donors to send the seeds directly to the winners once known. Obviously, like any seed transaction, everyone will be on the honor system to uphold their end of the bargain. If this is to become an annual even, maybe we could try sending the seeds to a single person who then distributes them to the winners from there the next time. I think sending directly to the winners is the best thing to do this time.

As for numbers, since the grid is now full, I can draw the numbers anytime. How about I draw them and post them no later than 6PM Pacific time tomorrow? Does that sound OK?

Thanks again everyone,
Brian
