I been wanting to ask growers if they plan on growing any of the older seed this year and what seed they plan to grow. I plan on growing the 611.5 Hester 1999 seed this year. I like this seed because,,,, I just like it.

Here's how I see it Brooks...There once was an old man who lived down in Kentucky who raised race horses. Every year he used Secretariat as a stud because he believed that there could never be a better horse, period. Every year his two year olds placed third or fourth at the big race...just out of the big money, but close enough to keep on doing the same thing. His crazy cousin lived way out west. He also raised race horses. Each year he used the winner of the big race as his stud. Some years his results were horrible. Some years they were average. But one year his best horse won the big race and ran faster than any horse had previously ever run. He became rich and famous and quickly put his horse out to pasture only to learn that it had no seeds in it.

I am going to try and germinate some old seeds, 1997 and before this year just to see what happens.

hey brooks, if i can get a 946.5geertz to germ, i will do a 946.5geertz X 1367rose for a fellow grower who doesn't really have the room for experimeting but would like to see an old favorite get planted. Mix a little old with a little new and see what happens.

I was thinking of planting an Emmons seeds from 1998... but I'm not sure. There are too many interesting seeds to plant this year.
Vineman makes an interesting point. If we stand back and take a look at ourselves, it's hard not to be amazed at the progress of this sport. We're either getting a lot better as growers (I mean, the body as a whole) or the seeds are improving at an astounding rate due to the selections we make. It must be a lot of both...
What might be interesting would be to take a very top notch grower and have that person plant only 10 year old seeds, then see if they come out several hundred pounds lighter than their own track record. (Glad I'm not a top grower, so I don't need to volunteer......lol)

And you did a good job too Russ! haha! One thing though, your stories makes sense, mine don't(but not very often does this happen), LOL. Which reminds me of the time I personally went to see see Secretariat run in the Kentucky derby,,,,,,,, OK, no time for a story,,,,
Cliff, I was seriously considering like crossing a real good old school seed with a 1068 Wallace, crossing something real unique. Like a 567.5 Mombert, which sounds like a good idea. Im gonna have to break out my jar full of them 567.5 Momberts and my 5 gallon bucket of 1068's and give it a try.....really I am.

Dean, I just looked up the 946 Geertz and it has alot of the 827 and 722 Holland in its back ground. I really would like to see a old school seed like these crossed into a top notch seed just to see what happens. Could be very interesting I think.

The genes haven't improved that much; they've just become more available. Obviously, the 1400+ genes were present as early as 2000, but the first 1400+ wasn't grown until 2003 from a 2001 seed with grandparents from 1997 or earlier. I will also be planting a 611 Hester this year. I tried some older ones last year, but I had a crappy year. My biggest was a squash from the 968 Sproule. My 1230 Daletas and 801 Black were about the same weight, and the 801 was a much better plant. I crossed the 1230 with the 801; if nothing else, it should grow perfect shape and color.

Brooks, Ken Byers(the person im doing this for), says the 946.5geertz is responsible for throwing some significant fruit. I don't know too much about it but I think i would win a bet if was to say ken does his research/homework. The trick will be in timing the pollens with the female. Should be fun.

the 946 Geerts is a grandparent of the 723 Bobier. It grew a couple over 1000lbs.

I will be doing a 825.5 Shymanski x 869.5 Calai, will also have a 805 Pukos in the patch and one other. With luck I will get a 887 Orr x 1068 done in another growers patch. May plant a 887 in my patch for a 805 x 887 cross. I will be sending some PURE Lloyd genes over seas in hopes of a pure Lloyd x 723 cross. I have always wanted new x old. Talking with Welty and Beachy helps me make the crosses with the best chance to do anything. A lot of thanks goes out to them since I have drove them nuts for almost 5 years now. If any one knows of where I can find another 946.5 Geerts Please let me know. Thanks also to the others I have sent seeds to make some crosses for me. Ken [email protected]
