Is there any substantive difference between dried grits/polenta and corn meal for using in the patch? It appears to be the same except for maybe how coarsely ground it is.

Polenta is what fancy folks call grits. LOL

No "grits" or fancy smancy word for "grits" will ever see the patch here !!!

(sorry my southern friends but it's on the yuck list here for breakfast foods)

I do however use cornmeal found and ground at my local feed supply....

ha ha Ed,,,,been there (the great southern states) and I have to say it's a "texture" thing with me...I'm not an oatmeal kinda guy either btw and that Yankee food "they" say !! LOL

Kathy, I go to the feed store and order whole corn ground fine, the next week I pick it up when it arrives from the mill. Nothing added...50lbs runs around $4.00 now here in the northwoods.

Grits 'aint nutten but some funny white stuff found mostly where moonshine has ruined the taste buds.

Grits is corn with the healthy seed coat and germ removed. They leave squirrels chew off the germ and spit the kernel on the ground. Then they rake the degermed corn up and throw it in a barrel with some old battery acid. It gets stirred with a canoe paddle until the seed coat is eaten off by the acid. The rain barrell with the dead bird in it is the rinse step. Finally it is dried on a rusty old screen door.

Then my friends they call the full soft kernels hommeny and the smaller hard cracked pieces grits. My beagle would not eat either. They also tell anyone slightly removed from the South that we donnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn't know how to taste great Southern foods. OK I guess I don't. :))

Mr. Ed:

The South did not lose the war, we simply ran out of bullets, men, supplies horses, money and leaders, other than that we did just fine, LOL.

I don't like grits either Y'all!

Now Doc you are just barely over the Mason Dixon line and that is some fierce Yankee talk there! LOL Grits are good, but so is whole oat oatmeal. By the way moonshine doesn't ruin taste buds, it opens up the sinuses and improves the ability to taste. LOL

Grits? Are we talking about Matt Winey's favorite food? My kids love grits with Cheese! Jeff liked them, mostly with fish though. It's a southen thing. Had to take some to illinois with me, cause granny couldn't find any for the boys...lol. I'm a yankee at heart and always will be. I love my oatmeal but eat grits every now and then. Something you have to either be brought up on or accuire a taste for. If I put grits in my patch,,,the dern chickens we have would think they have died and gone to heaven!

Why do southeners have so much pride in such a lame dish. Theres some strange form of pride in their eyes when they talk about it. They don't just say "Grits" like you would say any other word. Same as "Sweet P-tadda Piiie". My father is a die hard southerner (One of those "the south will rise again" types) and I still dont get it. I guess its a "Southern Thang"...............

I went to school in Virgina for two years. We learned to hold our noses and cholk 'em down with Red Eyed Gravy. Still do just to stay in touch and prove I'm a man. They clean thangs out all the way to tomorrow morning. If the sandy grits don't the residual acid ppms from dehulling do.

Now if you could locate the dump where the germs and hulls get tossed you might really have a gormet treet for the garden critters. Many a rooster up at sunrise lost his crow eating grits. They ground off the beak seal. After that all they did is hiss and lost their status. Nothing more pittiful than a rooster that cannnnnn't crow. :)

Yes they will but like anything beyond mother's milk for us they have to be trained to eat that which we cast or toss upon or to them. :))) There should be a law in California somewhere that makes it illeagle to train birds to eat such unworthy food. Now that's a foul thought.

Ya better call in someone with astute brain power to run rebuttals and post studys to prove me wrong. I'm on an insane roll. Chances are that one in a hundred will pick it up as the gospel. That would be a terrible wrong for mankind to endure.

I was just in Nashville for a large company convention and ordered a meal that came with grits. Being a person that will always try something at least "once" I decided to give it a go.....well I am glad I tried it, now I never have to try it again.
