I may end the tour in longmont, because I have access to a cool little area near my patch for a bar-b-que. But will work out the details later.

Must be all newbie growers Denver and north up there, Except for J.S.who holds the record. I have not heard of any patch tour discussion among US Southern Colorado veteran giant pumpkin growers down here...LOL..Good time to stoke up the fire is right now as it is 4 degrees and snowing where I am with 3-5 more inches forcast on top of our already tons of the white stuff. Tomorrows high might reach 10 if we are lucky Brrrrrrr....Can't wait until the big thaw which is not looking like it will be any time soon....

Well us Northerners well were not newbies, sure we havent had one bigger than 660 pounds yet. But we have talked about it for a while, but like everything, someone like me decided to try to organize a patch tour. I remember trying to e-mail someone and never got a responce back,
We have a lot of people growing pumpkins in colorado. Yes a lof of newbies, but like you We want to make colorado known for the big pumpkins, Heck Colorado broke 1000 when it was considered very hard to do.(yes Scherbur is my hero_)
Everyone is welcome to attend, But I Figured that the colorado springs growers probably wouldn't want to drive up to Boulder County to see the pumpkin patches. I'm sure in their minds we haven't proved ourselves yet. But I hope you decide to organize one in Southern Colrado and I'll try to go to it.
Aslo wyoming growers are welcome tocome, Longmont is about 60 min drive from Ft Collins. I just want my state to be in the top 15 for pumpkin producing state, so it's worth it to me and other coloradian to try to do everything I can . True, pumpkin growers have done a lot for this state, More people interested in attending weigh offs the bigger the prize could be. my 2 cents worth. Captain

So if I drive 200 miles from Holyoke to Boulder to see your patch, then can my patch be part of the tour too? Just kidding, I am starting to get others to start growing out here so maybe we can eventually help push CO into the top 15.

If we had the dogs hauling the keg right now it would freeze before it got to the next patch..lol..Temp is -4 and falling at the moment, and high for the day was 14..Brrr.You folks in WY.are really fealing the cold I will bet. One good thing is maybe if it stays this way all the varmints such as tree rats which we have way too many of here will succumb, and their populations will decrease for the 2007 growing season, so I can concentrate more on my plants instead of fighting threats from critters lurking to end the season early every year....

This will be the year Colorado newbbies rock the house and take down those southern and northern growers, be it Colorado or Wyoming......makes no matter, Its going down.....I have seen it in my crystal Wiz Ball, Gonna beat James, Joe, Pete, Capt'm, LongBeard too, U read it here first..... I will have the biggest.......Yo!
PS: What is the ColoradoState record for tree-rats?, they sure are hard to measure OTT.....lol...and they dont much like foliar sprayin either? But I'll have the biggest, been feeding them 4 squares a day........had to enlarge the doggie door, they really like the dogs food.
All fun aside, we should have quite a few new growers this year, patch tours would be fun. Grow them other veggies too as we will weigh and log green squash, long gourds, tomaters, watermelon, canteloupes, cabbage AND tree rats.....listing all on the site weighing on a certifed scale, establishing some numbers or records...... I talked with Barry Todd this weekend, as far as I can determine, he owns the green squash record at 200lbs weighed on a cert scale in the 90's, pics to come.....So all you Rocky Mountian Growers, Old and new, get your seeds, make your plans, Grow em BIG, bring em down and weigh em.......Jared's weighoff...coming in Oct 2007
And new for 2007------Rocky Mountain Giant Vegetable Growers RMGVG............We are grow'in BIG...tell your friends

My grandfather always said never brag about your bull, when the bull hasn't even been born."
I think that this yr the colarado pumpkin grower will supprise everyone. We have three weigh off's for this state two are GPC certified, the other doesn't know which end to sit on.
As far as tree rats, their not worth all of the extra work, but taste food fried. Maybe we should have a catagori on best tasten tree rat recipe. Captain

You guys are something else. You will grow it with the attitudes that are showing. Keep on keeping on. Tree Rats were called Gray Ghosts where I grew up. We were'nt men untill we could bark one with a .22 cal. long. Hit the bark under the Rat and don't waste any meat. :)

The smart fox keeps an eye on all things, and when he moves on the coyote will take hold. Foxes are better to guard against and keep the tree rats away...Looks like more snow is coming and where I am it still has not melted in 2 months. Total permafrost on the garden. I will bet my many worms have gone record deep this year due to too much cold even with snow insulation. then again it could make our worms more hungry and hardy, just as it does us..

We will see if we stop the trend an not get any more snow accumulation from this Friday. Has snowed every Friday for the last 4 weeks. Add 4" to the Wiz patch totals...of 7", 3", 9" 30", 22" 10" + 4" = 85" to date. I dont think I have ever seen this much this earlier and not melting too fast. Good insulation for the ground too, Hey James Im thinking the bugs got froze this year......

One Year I sliced up a tree rat with my shovel. Caught him in my strawberry patch under the netting. He got him self a shovel necklace, I cut his tail off and hung it up on the flower hanger pole to warn all the others away.......I didnt notice the telephone man watching me from the neighbors yard......thought I was going on be on the nightly news.......lol. Still waiting for that telephone man to fix my phone.........
