Has anyone read or have an opinion on hybrid vigor? Am a new grower and read an interesting article months ago. Had no choice but to self because my other seeds didn't come up, probably because of my inexperience. My nephew is going to grow these seeds next year ( his first year ) and will self them again. Told him I have other seeds, but he wants to try them. Seed is 803 Rockwell 04 ( 805 Pukos X 845 Bobier ). The selfed seed is alot smaller than the original. Thanks. This is my first post. Have be reading everything on this site since spring.

Your seed has the parental blessing of two of the finest growers in the business. Both have excellent crosses in their lines. Both have excellent vigor in their lines. You have them 50% each in your seed.
Beyond that we have mixed opinions how to make that seed even better. Your approach is one of the opinions. I'm not sure anyone knows for sure otherwise more consistancy in seed production would be showing up.
My opinion is that your good management of basic manures, minerals and cover crops will serve you better than trying to figure out how to better an already great seed. Get the PH up to 6.8 - 7.2, the Organic Material over 5% and use organic low number fertilizers. You will grow a dandy when the patch and your are tuned up with some experience. Stay tuned in here for many considerations as to how you can get the big suckers to grow in your patch. Good Luck!!!
