I keep hearing about using styrofoam underneath the pumpkins but I want our patch to look more natural. Wouldn't a bale of hay work just as well, spread out underneath the pumpkins?

I'm not an expert but I used the blue stuff. You can start with a small piece and as the pumpkin grows, add more just under the sides. I poked some holes in the original piece to keep water from pooling. You could probably put some hay over the foam to hide it further. Last year I didn't put anything under and it was just as good on the bottom. I'm not sure if putting hay or straw under it is a good idea. It might start to compost or keep the bottom to soft, I don't know. good luck. I'm still trying to break the 250lb mark Amy

a three ft. by three ft. piece is big enough its amazing how little of your pumpkin is actually in contact with the ground . it wont take long for a healthy AG to hide it!!!!! ernie
