The plant brings on males first, to set a scent trail, for the insects that will do the pollination. The removal of males may retard the development, of females. This can be used as a means of holding back females for a brief period while you build the food factory.

I remove all flowers until the vine approaches twelve feet. Then we let them come on and start, to pollinate, at about fifteen feet.

Sorry docgripe, you got this one wrong. I have three pumpkins and two squash plants with females and no males to be had.

most plants do go in the correct pattern of males first, but a few plants can lag behind occasionally. Be patient!

Is it common to have females on the secondaries first? It looks like we will have a few of these. I assume you would polinate all females and then cull later.

Skid, I set my pumpkins close to July 1st. Your females will be opening soon and you'll have plenty of males by then also. How long is your main vine now? Sounds to me like your right on schedule. Can you start a picture diary?

don't worry gene, looks like plants are going well for you. males will be the first ones to come on. hang in there. if you haven,t pollinated by the third week of july then you might have a problem. you could have your main out past 20ft by then which would certainly help in setting the new calif. state record.keeping my fingers crossed for you, good luck.
