i want to grow dill's giant atlantics next year. i am going to dig a pit and add stuff to it, how many plants do you think i would be able to fit in a 36 sq feet area, that is about i big i am going to dig the pit. also how many hours of sun do pumpkins need? the area i want to plant them in gets about 2 hours of sun in the morning and about 4 hours of intense afternoon sun. will that be enough? also if i was to add the manure in there late this summer, will it be plantable by next spring? also can i use horse manure too???

Minimum space required for a shot at 1000 lbs is 300 square feet based on the words of heavy hitters. Specifically Andrew Papez. 36 square feet could get you a pumpkin a few hundred pounds if you were lucky. Now for my personal opinion, 6 hours is not enough light. CUT DOWN THE TREES!!!!!!!!!

haha whats funny??? i dont see nothing funny ! if you think that is a dumb question, here is a piece of advice. "the only dumb question is the question that isn't asked."

I appologize. You are right. There is a lot of info you can easily access on this and other sites. Read what you can then what you don't understand, ask the question.

What's funny? Well....you just might get seven or eight leaves to fit in that area! Remember, each leaf usually gets two feet acrossed! The main vine can grow a foot a day!

i have ALWAYS been told that ANY manure is workable-that is, not too hot, after its been through a winter.I mean if it were produced that summer than next year it should be fine. Also, if it doesnt stink at all, thats another good indication that its useable. I dont think you have enough light but it would be interesting to see how well you can do with just 6 to8 hours a day. I think it can be done just not maximized. Hey pappy, everytime i see your name you remind me of papsmear. I just thought id pass that on.

my bad. i should i have elaborated on that. the 36 sq feet is where i am going to dig a pit, and put the ingrediants in there. then is atleast 2000 sq ft for them to roam.

Thanks for clarifying that Pumpkinidiot. 2000sq. ft is much better. You can plant all the seeds you want in your pit. I would thin to 2 plants though.

Why are you waiting until next year? You could still get one in this year.

PI, Grow one this year. Do what you can to amend your soil now. Then do some more amending in the fall. Have some fun and grow one this year. Do you have seeds to grow?

well just to let you all know i started a big max about a week ago. it has it's 4th leaf coming out, and i plant it in the garden patch that i had reserved for tomatoes and beans, but since i have this i will not plant that stuff. the place i planted it is has rich soil, plus i added some 10-10-10 to it before i planted it today. i was wondering if any body has any tips for me?? just to let you know the 3rd leaf is about 2-3 incehes wide.

PI...(I refuse to use that other name)....why not put a few tomatoes in here and there anyway. By the time the pumkin takes over the tomatoes will be tall enough to live inbetween the vines...that way you won't alienate the tomato eaters....you really need to grow an atlantic giant though...........G

lets say then i was to grow AG. if i didnt take care of it all that well , i would most likely still turn out with a fairly large pumpkin? i know what it would i took really good care of it.

PI, Grow an AG partner! Even with little to no care it should kick the crap out of any other variety! Plus you will gain valuable expierence with the "Big Daddy" of all the pumpkin varieties. Who knows you may even throw down a regional or World Record!!!

PI, it depends on what kind of bugs and disease you have down there. I would bet you wouldnt get anything if you dont control bugs. Big Max will be the same way. BUT GROW THE AG!!!!!!!!! You must control bugs if you even want a pumpkin. That is my take anyway.

PI throw in the AG by next week it will be twice the vine that you have now...The mistakes you make this year will be the greatest teacher...Trust me I know....G i left tomatoes in last year and the vine grew up the stakes and ate them!!!Way to funny!!!
