i think of a vine split as length wise along the vine and a break perpendicular to a vine split. main vines can break early on if they are reaching toward the sky and then they break when they get to long and fall over. or they can break when one is training or moving the vine. the tip of the vine is especially vulnerable since it is young, tender and small. I didn't this one... and i know of other who have too. it's no fun. but you can still grow a pumpkin on secondary. but generally the bigger ones are on the main vine.
prevention.... be careful !!! if you have opnce reaching for the sky... support it.
don't train/move your plants in the morning when they are cooler and more brittle than they would be later in the day.
move gingerly around your plants...
