Last night I was approached by acouple of businessman from the twin cities that were in my little town for a golf tournament. They said that they owned a garden center in the twin cities and they buy 28,000 pumpkins a year for Halloween sales. They saw my pumpkin and they were impressed and wanted to buy it. They offered me 32 cents a pound. I declined, I knew it was worth more than that, and that pumpkin prices go up the larger they get. I took their cards and told them I would get back to them. My wife called the newspaper and they are coming over to take pictures and interview me so I have to wait for that, but I would like a little extra cash for the next growing season. I am having a pretty good first year thanks to the little 290 Desrosiers that I got from this site. Eric

the old saying, its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it comes to mind. your window of opportunity to sell it is narrow. think like the guy who wants to buy it. would you want to buy a 500 pound pumpkin just for one day? meaning, halloween? of course not, you want it on display for a few weeks at least. at that point word of mouth spreads, and people come from all over to see this giant pumpkin. the closer you get to halloween, the harder, at least in my opinion its going to be to sell it for the price you want to get. if they only have it on display for a week, that's hardly enough time to advertise it for any practical use. i'm not saying that you should jump at the first person that offers you a few bucks, but, if you really are intent on selling it, you need to push it, and play all the angles. i know it sounds silly with halloween pretty much a month away, but, you never know what's going to happen. your pumpkin could rot tomorrow, or next week, or it could last way into november. or, someone with an even bigger pumpkin might come along and take these guys up on there offer, then they dont' want yours anymore. just a few things to think about..

good luck, and good job with the 500 pounder!!

The winning pumpkin at the Puyallup Fair weigh-off weighed 808# and paid $500. That is about 60 cents a pound. Second place paid $250 and it weighed 753#...now we are down to about 30 cents a pound!
