I have seen alot of pictures with growers putting styrofoam underneath their pumpkins. What is the purpose of this? I am curious because I bought a sheet of it, and I don't know why.

Putting foam under your pumpkin has several purposes. One is to keep the bottom from rotting or going soft due to the moist ground. Another is to keep mice and other rodents from entering your pumpkin from the bottom. You have to be careful on the size. You do not want it to be much bigger than the pumpkin or it will hold water (very bad). Instead, as the pumpkin grows continue to add additional pieces of styrofoam.
