fellow growers, i am trying to nurse along an AG with a bad stem split just for a halloween jack-o-lantern. weigh-off hopes ended back on Aug. 13. i have read of silicon polstices to fill the cavity. are we talking about plain old shower stall type silicon sealant ? anyone got any other satisfactory repairs for this situation ? appreciate all input. thanks. duff Topsfield, Ma.

Hi Duff! I, too have a bad stem split on my personal best, the stem is almost split in two! I originally packed cavity with cotton balls soaked in Captan paste, this worked, but Captan shrinks when it dries, so I had to keep re-applying. Then I noticed stem turning dark and was worried about internal rot in stem. I removed all cotton and found no rot inside stem. I re-applied a thick paste of sulfur dust, which seems to work better than Captan, and is less toxic. As long as you don't have a hole into the pumpkin's cavity, you should be O.K. Once outside air gets into pumpkin, there's not much that can be done.Good luck!
Holdin on for 20 more days! kilr
