I am a first time grower and I hope this isn't a stupid question, but how do I know when a pumpkin has reached it's maximum growth potential? I am growing pumpkins on City Island in the Bronx, NY, a zone 6B garden. Any help would be much appreciated.

You cant tell until it splits due to rapid growth....then you know its a little less than that.Although this sounds like a smart-ass comment its likely true. Each seed is different as is each environment and each days weather.Look around at past seasons results....local to you the biggest was last years 684 by Farmer Scott,a 816 in New Jersey a few years ago,and a 672 upstate from you a bit. These are the top weights in this vicinity.Given enough luck and good practice I believe 800+ is attainable where you live.(we're talkin AG's here right?.........G

Keep measuring it and comparing to the previous measurements.
I believe the phrase is, "if it ain't growin' its a goin'"
Again, you don't ever know the breaking point until it breaks... sort of like taking the turkey out of the oven 10 minutes before the timer pops up..
