I am guilty of planting my pumpkin seeds too late, but I still have hope that I will grow pumpkins. I need to know whether I am currently growing a squash or a pumpkin. Our female pumpkin blossomed last week and I realize how late it is, regardless I would really like to know whether I am growing a squash or a pumpkin. Our baby is green. Can this green colored fruit grow into the the pumpkin we always dreamed of. I just got the two pumpkin books recommended by this website and it appears like most pumpkins start out yellowish orange. Can pumpkins start out green?

Many types of pumpkins start green. Field pumpkins for example. Most growers on this site are growing Dill's Atlantic Giant pumpkins. AG's start out a creamy yellow color and most turn some shade of orange when they begin to ripen. What type of seed did you plant?

Caroline~ It is late in the season now, and i am growing Atlantic Giant pumpkins and all mine always start out creamy yellow also, but since the season is late and temps are cooler some of my plants are still trying to produce pumpkins and some of them are a light green color, and none of mine were ever like this, i think it may also be because i used ironite to make the leaves greener? anyway i think it is mpostly because it is late season cold temps, some even start out green and then turn the yellow color, whatever it is hope you figure it out. ~Bill

some start out green and end up as a pinkish, creamy yellow color. I heard this on the mallorn pumpkin list. They usually go heavy when they are like that. Is it light green or dark green? time will tell what you got, can't always be judged by color. although i would think a cream yellow would turn out to be a pumpkin and not a squash. green is a different story, could be either

Hi Caroline ! Although I'm a beginner myself, I planted regular old Halloween carving pumpkins - not really big pumpkins- called Conneticut Field, I believe - and, they definitely started out green and turned a beautiful bright orange by late Sept. I'm also guilty of starting late this year but am hoping that the two I have growing, which are still also green, turn orange in time for Halloween.
