I have several pumpkins that I want to share with friends. My question is: When is the best time to pick them and how do you "cure" them so they don't turn to mush quickly. This is sure a fun hobby

I would like to know this also. I have a large number of the "Big Moon" variety of pumpkin that seemed to be ripe about two weeks ago. I have left them on the vine till now but we have had 95 degree plus heat here in the midwest the last few days and I wonder if this could cause rot. I also have a 300lb atlantic giant who has slowed down and may soon need picking.

I think keeping it cool, dry and perhaps dark is the answer. I culled a 50 lb pumpkin AG 4 weeks ago, and placed it in my storage room where it is fairly cool and dry and dark. I didn't place any fungicide on it. It is still doing fine with no evidence of getting soft. Unfortunatly its not going orange either but is remaining a creamy yellow. Last year I had to move a 110 pound pumpkin inside about september 15th because of freezing temps. It survived until halloween without any special treatment other then keeping it dry.
