bill, i've read that you had borers before, and what you describe sounds to me like vine borers. are you burying your vines? i know in rare cases when some people bury there vines, rot can set it. scott

WildBill, I had (have) the same problem. My thought is a vine borer is in that part of the vine but it will still grow before that spot. My pumpkin has been growing about 2-3 weeks with a rotted vine after my pumpkin. I plan on burning my plant once the pumpkin is done growing.

wildbill and all, similarly suffered a hollowed out mushy vine on either side of my best pumpkin this season. had to yank the plant not knowing what got it. took the approx. four foot section of mushy vine and disected it w/o finding any signs of borers ? still hoping someone out there comes up with an answer. happened in the pacific northwest by one account, and they don't have borers there...yet ? don't want to repeat next year for sure ! duff topsfield, ma.

Hi all,
We are first time growers, but thought we might chime in another possibility. We too, have had problems with borers. Initially, we were cutting into the vines to remove them, but then started injecting BT instead. The BT caused much less damage to the vines. Anyway, we also found a vine that looked reasonbly healthy one day, and then had a complete collapse with dried up leaves in two days time. We removed the vine and found it had been hollowed out in at least three places for a distance of around two feet each direction. There were no borers in the vine. We believe they were definately there, but had their fill and left the vine to pupate in the soil. Perhaps you had borers, but they have now moved on leaving their mark behind.
