Can anyone tell me when pumpkins in Western PA usually stop growing? I was thinking early to mid September, but I wasn't sure. I have a 40-pounder going right now (my biggest so far, how pathetic is that!) and I was wondering how much more time it has to grow. This site rocks, and this hobby of ours is fun. Thanks all.

I grew up in Pa and can tell you that the pumpkin should continue to grow some into early October. Depends on the weather but September should be a decent month. My brothers last year was still growing (very little) when he cut it off October 29th. Good luck

You have all of the time between now and first frost which can arrive, but usually does not, as early as Sept. 15. If you plant remains healthy it will grow some clear into October.
No shame to have whatever you have. We almost all started small and learned as we grew. And for sure, with no shame, please bring it, to the weigh-off October 1, in Altoona. there you will really get, to meet some great guys and gals, who one time likely had a 40 pounder at this hour, in the season. Don't let the big hogs put an attitude, on 'ya. You are learning with each year's experience. We all know that and understand your situation.

Generally, Sept. is a slow month for growing giants here. Lay off the fertilizer. The katydids have told me to expect our first frost around mid-month(Sept.)(When they first sing, frost comes in 6 weeks, mark my words!) Anything you do manage to grow will be a new personal best. Congratulations! kilr

Yea but the wooly buggers have small dark sections. This means we are going to have a mild winter. Maybe those dudes have been sucking up fermented pollen.
