Hi,

My pumpkin is not in the shade. It is day 39 and it is 48 inches circumference. It is starting to get a bit orange. How important is shade in continuing its growth up to october? I am in Quebec city and the pumpkin is in full sun and full wind (in my rooftop garden) which is why I would like to avoid the engineering of a shade structure if possible-due to the regular 40mph winds.

Thanks,

mark

Just throw an old white sheet over it, thats all I do.

If you look at my diary, I paid a price for poor sheltering. No shelter will give you a premature oranging and tough skin, the pumpkins think it's time to slow down growth.

Mike, when you say just throw a sheet over it, you mean stake it up, right? Any place my fabric would touch a pumpkin after getting wet would cause a rotten area to form, if it sits there moist all day.

We just throw old cotton sheets over ours. Have not had an issue with rot.

just remove the sheets during rain, no sunburn will happen, and put them back on when the sun comes out.

Thanks everyone. I have covered it up with a t-shirt (how pathetic at this stage in the game that the "giant" is so small as to be covered with a t-shirt) The growth seems to have slowed quite a bit in the last two days.
Maybe I should rub in some sun block too.....
