Can someone tell me if you should put something under the growing pumpkin to protect from rot or leave it on the lawn?

Put something under it. I put down boards, and a layer of 2 inches of sand., ya, many guys have had them rot laying on the ground or a rat has eaten up through the bottom...

Hello Barry, When I was growing onto my lawn, I had problems with insects and late-season mildew. I had a couple punkins that were burrowed into by cut worms (red worms that a small and one of a farmer's worst enemy). Also, the pumpkins were getting moisture on the bottoms and sides. There developed small areas that the pumpkins were rotting. So...yes, put some boards, styrofome (insulation type), or at least a layer of sand. I would recomend putting some insect killer such as diazonan (cant spell LOL) mixed into the sand under the pumpkin. Good luck to your growing. O ya, I have never had any problems with rats or burrowing animals of any type so I can not help ya with that.

I didnt think there was a nice thing to say about STYROFOAM! But It has worked very well in the garden for me. During hectec pollinating schedule w/ numerous fruit, I use a packing foam underneath/covering until further observation! DBH
