Culling of slower growing fruits is a good idea if max size is what you are after. Don't cull too soon. I did earlier and then lost the one I kept. Have heard that 20 days since pollination on keeper to make sure it is a grower. I also learned this year to do the removal slowly, cut 1/3 of stem on 3 consecutive days, or 1/4 on 4 days. I cut one all at once earlier in the year and the next day my keeper split. Hope this helps, hope that some more exp. growers will chime in if I am off-track. Peace Wayne

Also, good idea to treat open cut with fungicidal powder of some type. (Captan) Peace Wayne

I culled a 40 pounder on my 1370 Rose to keep a smaller one down the main. I ended up with no pumpkins on that plant because the smaller one aborted about 8 days later.I now have two pumpkins on this plant bigger then a soft ball. All i can hope for now is some nice porch pumpkins.

Now I may be wrong on this, but I believe that if a fruit gets to 25-30 inch circ by day 10, it's probably not going to abort. It just doesn't make sense for a plant to pump that kind of energy into a fruit that won't survive. From what I have observed so far this year, if a fruit is going to abort, it doesn't pack on a lot of weight. Here is the disclaimer:
I am a new grower and know very little about growing AG's! Always consult with a professional grower.
