Croley bend, I have only bought one seed. It was a 582 Hester '01 that I purchased at an auction. I germinated it, transplanted it, and watched the seedcorn maggots lay it to waste immediately. Every other seed I have was obtained by simply emailing other growers, and requesting their seeds. It's amazing how far a polite email will get you with most growers. This winter, seed offers will start showing up from this years pumpkins. There will also be a lot of trading and several auctions. A simple seed request costs no more than a Self Addressed Stamped Bubble Pack, and a note of thanks. It also doesn't hurt to tell the grower you are requesting seeds from a little bit about yourself. As far as what seeds to use, you got me there. I don't have a lot of knowledge about genetics, but others here do. I guess it depends on what you want to grow. Orange and pretty? Heavy and ugly? More experienced growers can help you there.

Monty's answer was right on the money. I might only add, that if you see a pumpkin picture posted on this site, and you like it's looks, or perhaps how heavy it was, then find out what seed it was grown from. Then make a post that you are interested in getting one of those seeds. Many times growers will freely offer their seeds to you when approached this way.
One note, if the grower that produced that seed is an active member of this site, then their email address is easy to find out, just put your cursur over the letter above their name and click.
