i'm already planning for next year, and just would like advice on best location for patch, as i have quite a few alternatives - is it best for patch to be in full sun all day and do shade structures, or possibly just an area that gets morning and early afternoon sun, and then shade from tall trees in afternoon/evening. something to think about as i sit and watch these guys grow. thanks

I would go with the early morning sun location, but thats just me because it gets over 100 degrees in the sun during the summer and the pumpkins hate the full sun.

Full sun!!! Your shade option doesn't shade the hottest part of the day anyway... And besides in your location it doesn't get all that hot during the day anyway right? Nice to have Ocean currents working in your favor... Every minute your plants are in the shade is another minute those chlorophyll pigments aren't vibrating with optimal activity and that's the primary source of energy! Check with some of the local guys from the area there and see what they think is best as they know the climate better than me. I've only been out there twice in my life :)
Hey Kev, how'd you like to have a forecast like this guy for August 1st? :)

full sun no question about it. If it is 100° then you want sun anyways because otherwise you get humidity probs as well.
the back 1/4 of my garden sees afternoon shade and mildew is a much greater problem in that area.

Dude,
Talk with some of the local growers - they will help the most. It gets hot in your area so you need to think about that. Most of the CA top weights come from an area less than 50 miles around you.
Email me if you need contacts.

thanks, good perspective - yep, its tough to put up with this weather - almost no humidity all summer long, but house prices are nuts - next step is to negotiate with my wife over where i can put patch versus where she puts horses. present site is ok, but is only about 1200 square feet, and i think next year i need alot more. i'll probably join the santa rosa men's garden club - cheers

My patch is in the sun from sunrise until about 5:00 pm. I kind of like the evening shade as it cools the plants down sooner after a hot day. It also allows me to water or spray in the evening and have the plants dry by night time. Loosing those last couple of hours may hurt some, but I don't suspect it's very much.
