I hate to be the first of the year but yesterday I had one go down to a blossom end split. It was on a 869.5 Calai plant and was just over 400lbs. It wasnt growing too fast , only about 20lbs a day. Ive been spraying with calcium , pumpkin has been covered , and it wasnt overwatered. All I can say is I did all I could do to prevent it, but it happened. The worst part is I have to make that trip to the patch everyday wondering if one of my other four will do the same.

Good luck all........................Darryl

Sorry to hear that. It is always sad news if it is the first of the season or the last one. At least you have four others that you can still work with. If that happens to one of mine I would be concerned about the others too. Wish you the best of luck. If I may ask, what does calcium do?

Darryl,
I checked out your diary. That was a very nice fruit that went down. Having 4 others going, gives you some insurance. I hope they hold together for you.

almost EXACTLY the same thing happened to me between
Friday night, the last time i had looked at the plant,
845 Bobier, and Sunday around noon. i was gone all day Saturday. 845, my two best fruit on it about nice canteloupe
size, split at the top of the fruits, look like a loaf of bread at a bakery (split-top type). sigh. lol. sigh again.
two of the other four sets are on sand now, the other two soon will be, and are under close surveillance, not that that will do any good, unless one splits and i will have to remove a few more vines.
i have recently removed every other secondary, did SOME vine burying, and the split fruit were on the main vine and
a secondary that i had let grow BeCaUse is was such a strong one...guess i will let the plant grow like mad to give its energy a place to g(r)o. ahhhh, pumpkins.....eric

Darryl, Dont feel too bad. Sounds like a carbon copy of what happened here this week. I been doin' the exact same things you did and the same result here. My blossum end split started to heal up, but 2 days later the stem blew wide open on 2 sides. I have to pics in my diary, posting more today. Hopfully we'll still get a couple bigguns to weighoff for the Buckeye this year. Grow em big!! Mike

Ha! We European growers beat you Americans this year! We already had a handful of nice sized fruits going down to splits during the past ten days or so! LOL Check the European message board…
We sure wouldn't have minded if you guys had beaten us in this respect! :-(
