Hey guys,
I walked out to my patch this afternoon to measure my pumpkin, and from a distance it looked like it had a white stripe on it...well, I walked closer and saw it had leterally exploded, four deep cracks coming from one central point at the blossem end. They are deep enough you can kind of see into the seed cavity. It was on day 6 today, and 18" circ...I guess it grew to fast. The odd thing was, it hasnt had any ferts the last 2 weeks, and no major rain either, just me watering a few gallons a day. Will I be able to save it, or should I cut it off?
Thanks, Jake Byrd

Chop it off. once the cracks go inside, especially that young, it's over.
i had a plant do that a few years ago to every one of them at softball size. never figured it out.

I had two explode this year Jake. It happens. No ferts either.
I think it was Alan Nesbitt who said "If you ain't blowing 'em you ain't growing 'em".

I just tore uo a plant that had similar problems. I'm now planting an early cover crop.

I culled a 50+ pounder a few days ago and immediately cut it open...you wouldn't believe how hot the guts of this fruit were. Outside temp at the time was 88 degrees F. I truly believe it was much warmer than 88 degrees inside the fruit. I will test my next cull's temperature with a digital gauge......
