I noticed today that some of my secondary vines have split

many on here will tell you to put captain, or some type of fungicide, then some will say bury, some will say not bury.
Just make sure you let it heal for a while, couple of days, then its up to you.

The split (long ways on vine) really does nothing restricting, as you lose (almost) no potential volume.

As far as why, wind?, people? critters? water?

Many more know much more than I do.

Grow em big
