In the first OTT measurment, it tells you to measure the entire circumfrence of the plant at any point? Does that mean one can measure stem to stem measurment? Not just the how big the pumpkin is from around the belly so to speak? Can someone clear this up?

Circumference should be taken in the widest area Parallel to the ground.

this is where I point people so they can see pictures.

but the table is old ... and it tells you to measure parallel to the ground for the Circ.
other say to measure the circ. at the largest point...
which is usually stem to stem...
that's how I do it ...i'm sure others do it the first way.
most of the time the two are very close.
either way they are just estimates to give us a idea how where we are.
hope this helps.

Well!? My pumpkin is very long. So if I use the stem to stem measurement it is much bigger, 6"+. So you can see I like the idea of using a stem to stem measurment. I guess it all comes down to the weigh in anyway, right!

Any chance of giving me a tour of your patch? I'm out of the running for anything spectacular this year just wanting to see how the other half lives.

Yeah, but read the part under the pictures:

"The Circumference Measurement should be taken where you have the LARGEST Circumference. It WILL NOT always be parallel to the ground. It may be above or below the stem and above or below the blossom point. On most large pumpkins the LARGEST Circumference IS NOT at the stem/blossom level. The LARGEST Circumference is necessary to obtain the most accurate Weight Estimate as most of the Circumference measurements used to obtain the Weight Equations were LARGEST Circumference"

hear, hear, couldn't have said it better myself.
lotta times i will measure parallel to the ground anyway, so that i am PROBABLY giving myself a less-than-the -maximum reading, for a nice surprise at the weighoff.
