This is my first year growing the Giant Atlantic Pumpkins and I was hoping someone could tell me if I should take fruit off the vine if there is more than one pumpkin on the same vine. I have one large pumpkin that is 40" in diameter and another one 4' down the vine that is about 10" in diameter. There is also a new fruit on the end of the vine. Should I cut off the 10" and the new fruit?

Mr king
You must ask your self do I want lots of pumpkins about 100lbs a piece or a couple maybe 3-4-or 500 lbs each or the chance for one 800 ++++ I am assuming you want a biggie at the end of the year, as do I. From all I have read on this site, you cannot be certain your fruit won't abort until it is about beach ball size, still no guarantee, but odds are good. There is so much info on this subject, go and look through the general discussion board and you will find man similar questions with some great answers by some very experianced growers.
Good luck, and READ LOTS

Absolutely.........get down to one. That puts you on the edge, of all possibilities, including a miserable loss. ..I'm, of the opinion, that it is better have run the race and lost than not, to have run the race at all.

It's the old adage: "don't put your eggs all in one basket" To get the biggest pumpkin, you must have only one. If you want some insurance, grow two. Some people, like myself, are satisfied with a 500 pounder.

I think you meant circumference. 40 inch diameter would be a record this early in the year.

I grow some plants for "size" and others for "color". For example........ on my 695 S.Handy and 1210 Kline plants I will leave one pumpkin per plant and hope for big one. On the other hand, on my 940 Mombert 2000, 425 Wolf, 915.5 Diffenbaugher and 553.5 Nesbitt the focus is color and I may leave 2 or 3 per plant and hope for several in the 350 lb. - 550 lb. range. I also planted the 487 Zunino for color but this plant is so agressive that I will probably keep only one on it and go for "big and orange".
