I grew one to 440lbs last year in 24sq ft of soil with the rest of the plant stretched out over rock hard clay soil.
Total plant size was about 200 - 250 sqft at the most.
I might reach 400 again this year in the same spot.

This year I'm growing an 721.5 Vincent "04" in un tested or worked soil , on May 29th I dug a hole 2ft x 2ft along side my house and directly planted the seed. Its now at Day 50 and the plant is the best one ive got, stump larger then pop can leafs measureing 29" across a main vine thats as thick as a beer bottle neck and its been growing a foot a day The main is around the 17 ft mark with 3 females ready to open and pollinate within the next 2 days. the total room available for this plant is 15 ft out from house to fence ( main is now turned to head left as it hit the fence, and the secondarys are out between the 4- 8ft mark. My Other plants with also good genes started inside last week in April and transplanted out into patch first week in may are much smaller with only 2 females pollinated. all have been aborts, I'm hopeing the 721.5 vincent will pop out a large one within the next 72 days before weight off.

Is that 12x4 just your rooted limit, or can we have some spillover of vines. . .it would help if you can gather a little more sun

I don't know the answer to your question exactly but I have an answer ... that answer is you'd probably get a larger pumpkin in 48 sq ft than if you didn't have any a patch at all !
I hope you're having fun and that you get something nice.

I am kinda in a similar situation... I am Uncle Wally to a disabled niece,, and growing a giant pumpkin is the project for the summer. May be a continuing hobby for us in the future! To our supprise,,having bought some seeds from ebay. (all germinated) We have a Plant with pumpkins.

my garden space that i originally alloted was about 150 sq foot and didn't think much about that. now that I lost my pickles to the pumpkin and am in fear,,,,or thrill,,, of losing tomato space, I am finding many questions to ask the Great Pumpkin.

Is there a study of direct relationship between the plant size and the fruit produced? Or what does the leave and vine provide for the fruit?

In culling the pumpkins,,,can i cull unwanted females by pinching off the undeveloped flowers?

I have three set, and am positioning them now,,i have found it useful to bury some of the vine just a few feet from the set pumpkin. Is this a problem? other than the possible restriction of growth and breaking the vine.

Thanks for any help you can give me.
Having lots of fun growing in the middle of Milwaukee.
