I mentioned this in another post - but received no answeres.. so I'll try again...

Since all of our county fairs are in early August-early Sept. None of my pumpkins with be large enough to let the kids show them.. (due to the May 1st heavy frost...)

So I plan to take all of them down to the truck stop scales for my final weights.

My question is this: We have good growing conditions through Halloween.. How long should I leave pumpkins on vine before harvesting for final weights?

until they stop growing.
I know it's hard to tell when they really stopped growing as it is hard to measure slow late season growth with a simple measuring tape.
so, I like this idea and think I will give it a try this year

I guess it really depends on your weather/climate and when you pollinated. Our weather in B.C. allows growth right up till mid October.

I have never yet had a possible record pumpkin. In view of that I take them off the vine and load the trailer two or three days in advance of the weighoff. My property is a loading challenge anyway.

If I thought five more pounds would make any difference I would not remove it from a growing situation until the last minute....like the night before. Then I would shrink wrap it to prevent over the road dehydration.
