I am seeing some pictures lately of decent size pumpkins without a lot of slack in the vines. I make this warning every year. It is better to have to much than not enough. The stems tend to like to split if they are stress.

Shannon makes a great point, but do it gradually! Took great pride in my vine training couple eveneings ago...only to find main split 1/2 way next morning...too much curve too soon...Good luck, Duff

I've had three stem splits thus far this year.....and I have not even touched the vines yet. Talking day two, three or four.

Some guys have the marbles to put a 90 degree curve in the main vine all at once! Call me yellow, but I do the same bend over the course of 3-4 days.
