im a newbie grower and i know some other newbies now and the more experienced lol my question is i have been discussing the what not to do list with late night chatters and well now am leaving it up to you to tell me what not to do lol as in Tlish who told me never play jump rope with your main vine ( dont throw it to repostition it) or OOOhboy Matt who said not to kill svbs with shovels lol and theres me the newbie who has learned never move a pumpkin too fast unless you want an early harvest. so anyone with funny words of wisdoms for newbie growers are welcome to post lol just for fun.

I have learned this year to be careful what you wish for. I had never seen a ribbon vine or a fruit that split on it's own. Now I have. The split came after culling a rotting fruit (from bird pecks), terminating several secondaries, foliar fert spray, and watering in one afternoon. Next day splitsville. One thing I still haven't seen...knock on wood (ouch...now my head hurts) is a SVB...and I hope it stays that way. Peace Wayne

Don't spray with Permethrin meant for keeping flies off your horses... Really burns and kills the GP plants.. (that's what happened to my 'first round' I believe....)
Don't let your goats see the garden... **too much temptation!** Don't let your kids think about 'freeing' their baby bunnies into 'the wild'... Don't let your Turkeys into your patch... Turkeys step on EVERYTHING - and it's really disgusting to step in 'turkey dung'.....

Try not to let your patch get too tangled. Last year, didnt pay attention and had two pumpkins on one vine and didnt know it.

Don't use a huge pair of scissors to trim the grass around the outside of your plant if you have the coordination of a stoned gorilla. I actually hacked off a leaf stalk...

If you really want to see how good roundup is, dont triple rinse your spray tank when using it to spray ferts.

Dont feel bad for people that claim they are having a terrible, disease ridden season with one disaster after another.......until you see what they bring to the weighoff, then make you're decision.

Look carefully at the flowers you want to pollinate. If you bring some males inside the night before, and next morning you look at them to find 5 lobes without pollen, you obviously need some eyeglasses or a good flash-light next time. :-)

Two additions from Pumpkin Hell 05.
Hey - if you ever hear a buddy say "Well, it looks good on paper" - DON'T. Especially if it regards shade structures.
And from last night--
Possums will not bother pumpkins IF there are tomatoes to be had BUT the pumpkin patch is a great place to hide ...
DO NOT holler "Sic 'em boy, you get 'im" until you know WHERE he is!

Never stand in a upright position and use your hoe as a hachet to cut a tendril off or you might just cut off the vine.

Don't ever use a shovel to cut off a vine tip while leaning over your prize pumpkin...
Don't ever use Round-up to kill the grass next to the pumpkin patch 'because it's not a windy day, and I don't feel like rotortilling'...

If you are getting up in years, your old bones ache and you move a bit slower still. Take care, of the morning deed, before assuming the hands and knees position. :))

when trimming a tendril and leaf stalk next to a nicely set pumpkin, never push the knife towards the pumpkin stem even if the knife is sharp and you think you will be able to stop it short of the stem. once the knife loses resistance and the cut is made, you might just have made another cut....into the pumpkin stem. just like if whittling, always guide the knife away from the delicate flesh while making a cut or you will end up seeing blood sooner or later, or in the pumpkin's sake, a clear liquid ooze.
