I bought this Malathion plus to use for vine borers,I didnt use it yet, I found it at home depot made by ortho. does anyone else use it and will it harm my plants.I only been using seven dust, but sevin doesnt work on vine borers and this is the only thing i found. I was looking for ambush, they didnt have it,and I know i need something for these vine borers so i bought this and a sprayer.

I use Talstar 1 and Merit, both can be found on pumpkinsupply.com. Matt is very quick at getting orders out. These are the only two insecticides i use.

I agree with Mike. However, if cost is a problem, I've had good luck with a product called Eight (Permethrin - same ingredient as Pounce and Astro - just not as concentrated) I've used it in rotation with Spectracide (lambda-cyhalothrin - same ingredient in Warrior/Battle/Scimitar). Both are commonly available in most garden stores or Home Depot type stores. No insect problems in two years, but I spray on a regular basis.

Correction: Triazicide is the product - made by Spectracide. Both words are prominent on the label.

Malathion is a very old chemical. I used it in 1998 and part of 1999 when nothing effective was readily available to the common gardener. It works ok...but washed off quickly I think. I still got svb's but felt better using it knowing at least I was trying...lol. That said....take it back. Seek out cuurently available much better products at places like Home Depot and Lowes..permithrins,lambda c, etc.....

Couple things I've had great success with against SVB in my gourds:
Preventive measure.. Seven + Dove spray... The seven coats.. but the dove dishwashing detergent gets into the soil around the base of the vine and dissolves the egg coats & skin of the vine borers offspring..
If borers are inside stem.. You MUST use a systemic pesticide.. Brand realy doesn't matter. You must make the plant tissues themselves toxic to the larva. You must 'surgically' remove all large larva that you find as well..
Malathion, Permethrin, etc.. are good IF they actually come in CONTACT with pest. I do not believe that they penetrate the soil deeply to destroy any eggs. And if larva are already in the stem - they are ineffective... **BUT** you can add Dove to any of these surface pesticides safely...
