I'm planning for next year now and would like to know what material for greehouses that lets in the most of the suns ray's (exp. UV) As well I like to know if a plant grown in a green house can do as well as one in direct sun light?

We use the 6mil UV Poly. Single layer on the hoop house. The difference in plants is very noticible. The green house plants are always healthier. The problem with the greenhouse it watering and keeping up with the pruning. I can barely see the other side of mine.

I had a 917lbs pumpkin last year in a greenhouse.I agree with Shannon about the wathering and pruning part. And not to mention the heath to work in,as some work at the pumpkins has to be done in the hottest part of the day.Another work is to open it every morning, and close it in the evening. It has to be done 5 months long, every day.On the other hand, you never have to work in the rain, pollinations are always dry,and same thing for the fruit.

Buy the 6 year 6 mil real-deal greenhouse plastic. Anything less will cloud & eventually tear. UV stabilized plastic makes the difference thus the 6 year life expectancy.

Klerks makes a nice clear poly until you get into the infra red or anti drip...which is usually for commercial growing anyway....Armin also makes a nice 6 mil film.

Years ago they used lime water to cut the sun's rays. Today most if not all greenhouses get a minimum of 30% shade cloth over the top. None however grow pumpkins. This may be a factor in the overall cost and management.
