Hi there,

I have a nice growing hokkaido pumpkin plant which had two opened female flowers but no open males, So I took AG pollen to pollinate. Does anybody know, if this will work out?

I'm not sure... Though I've proven that GP pollin will successfully pollinate Spagetti Squash and Nut squash - with an experiment this summer... Testing it on Zuccinni & yellow squash females right now - I should have some results in a week or two...

Tell me if they are successfully fertilized and begin developing..(so I can add that hybridization to my file...) You should know within 2 weeks if they're going to abort..

Good luck!!

yes, it will work. both are c. maxima. you can tell this by looking at the stem of a ripe Hokkaido, it is round and soft, just like those of AGs, a typical feature of c. maxima.

Thanks a lot scienceteacher and Martin ... BUT so sorry, I made a mistake. I mixed up things and it`s not a Hokkaido, it is a "Muskat-Kürbis" (in German) - Cucurbita moschata - so obv. not Cuc. maxima, does that mean, it won`t work?

Some studies have shown that all Cucurbita's can and do hybridize with each other.... results will vary...

You might get a seedless fruit - infertile hybrid
you might have all the hybrids abort - inviable hybrid

you might get a nice fruit with seeds and the seeds won't germinate - sterile hybrid....

you might get a nice fruit w/ seeds that will germinate and grow - successful hybrid..

As I reported in my diary... GPs were 50% successful in pollinating Spagetti squash.. While they were 100% successful in pollinating Nut Squash. Squash is maturing - but I do not know if there are viable seeds as of yet...

Thank you all for your replies. I can`t tell for sure, if those I pollinated took or not, because of the current weather situation. All I can say, tthey don`t look worse than my Ags at the moment. I will keep everybody informed, who wants to know or maybe just post how things are going.

Martin is right. Maxima and moschata don`t cross. All of them aborted.
