Hey all, a question for those of you who are lucky enough to have to battle the wind on a daily basis. Despite 8 foot windbreaks around the entire patch and smaller windbreaks in tight around the plants, the wind still manages to toss my plants around pretty good.
I stay on top of vine burying and don't remove any tendrils to keep the vines from rolling over and it seems to keep things on the ground and upright but the leaves are constantly getting flopped around pretty good. They seem to recover well after a long day of wind but they do get chafed from rubbing on eachother. As long as the vines are staying in place and there's no broken stalks, should I even worry? How do you deal with the wind?
Your thoughts, opinions, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

IMO, the main problem with continual wind is two fold. First, it dehydrates the leaves. Secondly, the continual flopping usually breaks down the leaf structure by September.....if not sooner.

To answer the question: To much wind is when the wind whirley gigs the secondaries, to the point, they twist off at the main. That really is to much.

If it snaps off your main vine, that is too much...
Hey, it happened to me!
It's funny, I'm beginning to think that wind, to a certain level is OK, in that after a while things appear normal again. I had a terrible wind storm earlier this year. It slowed me way down for a few days, but I'm back on track.
Other than the plant that had it's main vine snapped, however. This one was facing south, and into the wind.
IMHO, 40 to 50 mph is or can be damaging. But it also depends on time. A short microburst of 50 to 70 mph can be withstood, but 24 hours straight of 30 to 40 mph can be terrible. (That's what I had...) Anyhow, it's tough to put a number on it because we all have different windbreaks... Now, my sunflowers are up and protecting my patch. I can take just about anything now.... (sshhh, don't tell the wind!)
