Do most people burry the stump (first half foot or so), or is it usually left unloverd? I would burying might lead to rot.

Don't bury it. Let it get lots of air and sun.

you may want to get some cut pcs of clear plexiglass around
1 ft x 1 ft, screw then to a small piece of stake on each side and cover the area where the stump comes out of the ground
helps keep the root itself dry, but still allows for watering or rain to penetrate around the base
