It seems that no mater what I do, I can't keep the white roots covered. I can't tell ya how much time I have spent covering them. Does any else have this issue?

Ya i was haveing that problem last year, This year I applied spaghnum peat moss about 1" thick around the entire patch and then around the base of the plants i layed wood chips and havent had any problems this year, another benefit of the peatmoss and woodchips is it holds the moisture in

i've noticed it a bit this year again also. it's a good sign, and it doesn't hurt the roots to be exposed like that. keep adding dirt, though, it will only encourage more rooting. it happens when you have a fairly regular rainfall and somewhat constant soil moisture i've noticed.

Andy hit the hot button. the roots dont have to go deep to look for water when the soil is consistantly wet, so they just hang around the top.

Thank you all! I do water about 40 gallons a day so I understand now about the roots staying near the top. Sure glad its normal though.
