This is the first year that my leaves are really being damaged by the sun. It is usually the newest leaves a foot or so back on the vines. Shading helps some but they still get damaged. Is this typical with the extreme temperatures?

Mine are burning even with 60% shade and misting all day long. This was during our spell above 110 F. These intense direct daylight days just do damage.

very typical. The 3rd or 4th leaves from the tip are usually the most tender, not hardened off yet, but big enough to get burned bad. Shade cloth should eliminate the burn if it's set up properly in most cases. As the sun moves, sometimes the shade cloth doesn't cover all the leaves perfectly and some direct sun hits some leaves for an hour or so and burn occurs. Jimmy

unfortunately we are all in the same boat
here in rhode island we have experienced the same damage in four patches that i visited

ohio is getting the same damage

i think in part this happens because in our case we were crusing along at 80 degree days and cool nights then all of a sudden we got three days in a row of high humidity and temps 90 to 95 degrees
to much to soon

luckly the first couple sets of sides were ready to be dead ended and the others that got to badly burnt we will remove and allow the sides to grow a bit longer than normal

if we lost the end completely then we will just let a third stage growth take its place

This reminds me of a story.

I know a man named Don Black who besides having 18 patents for various chemicals, founded Great Barrier Systems. This company manufactures anti-graffiti coatings. His clients include various Olympic host cities, the NYC Metro System including the Brooklyn Bridge & all the Metro rail cars.

The reason his coatings work so well is his unique ability to blend polymers with UV inhibitors. One of his inventions is a unique & highly effective antitranspirant for plants.

To this antitranspirant he has added a UV inhibitor or "sunscreen" for plants. When he first gave me some to try out, all I could figure was to protect shade loving plants like PJM, Azaleas, Rhodies, Hostas, Ferns, etc from poorly chosen sunny locations. The product performed as expected with Rhodies making very large dark green leaves even in full sun just like their shade grown counterparts. The commercial appeal seemed too limited to waste much time on & we dismissed it as a mere novelty.

The finest application was when we added perfume industry scents (skatol & indol) to mimic the smell of human fecal matter. It made a KILLER Deer repellent & the treated Hostas remained unbroused & healthy for many weeks despite the new growth & high Deer pressure. The curious visitors to this public garden sniffed & snuffled their ways through the pathways; some smiling, others hurrying on.

Where is Don's amazing "shade in a bottle" when we need it?

No clogging of "stoma" in the leafs from this poly?
What were/are in the Uv inhibitors?

Don says they are a "trade secret". LOL I never saw any phytotoxicity at any of the tested rates. The last tests were administered under extreme heat & humidity too. 90 + 90 tropical-like conditions like the we've been experiencing around here lately.

You're right about the damage here, Dick. This past week has been kinda rough on my plants. Alot of leaves getting crispy. The plants are still growing alright though. Pollinated 2 on monday and set frozen milk jugs out beside them, so hopfully they will take. Mike
