I understand the system whereby Merit is used as a drench over the patch and then watered in afterwards to ensure it absorbed by the roots. Is there any advantage to spraying the actual leaves for immediate kill in addition to the systemic kill once the bugs begins to munch??

I've found great success by using liquid Seven + Dove dishwashing soap... sticks to the bugs and eggs and KILLS! If the Seven doesn't get them - the Dove dissolves their exoskeletons.... Also the dove helps to breakup the adhesion between soil molecules so that water can penitrate more easily.
I haven't had to resort to systemic YET (though it's in my cabinent in case of vine borers...) - but I've previously had great success with just spraying the systemic on the leaves of my gourds.. Every ten days..

Merit will also absorb through the foliage & it will do so much more quickly. The impact isn't quite as impressive as something like Furadan. But then what is?
